INMO AIR2: compact binocular augmented reality glasses weighing under 100 grams

Today, we’re introducing the new AIR 2 smart glasses model from Chinese manufacturer INMO.

The first thing to notice is the device’s weight. The glasses are lightweight—only 99 grams—and resemble the TCL RayNeo X2. The package includes a smart ring for an additional control option.

The body is made of quality materials. The device is ergonomically designed, with adjustable nose pads and a darkening lens attachment, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods and customizable to different face shapes and lighting conditions.

AIR 2 features a Chinese-made quad-core processor running at up to 1.8 GHz along with the ZiGuang ZhanRui AI chip. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, a Full HD camera, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

INMO AIR 2 is equipped with two full-fledged Micro-OLED displays. Our tests show that the resolution allows for high-quality, detailed visuals and crisp text with accurate color reproduction. The displays work smoothly, with no lags or flickering. In bright sunlight, even with the dark lens, brightness may not be sufficient, though the content remains readable. When creating content, it’s important to consider lighting and adjust the color palette accordingly. In most conditions, brightness is sufficient. One drawback is the high placement of the displays within the lenses. They sit too high, making it difficult to see the full image unless the glasses are positioned lower than usual. If worn like regular glasses, only the bottom half of the display remains in view.

The device can be controlled via touchpads on the arms, the smart ring, or voice commands. The touchpads recognize swipe gestures in two directions and short taps. The left touchpad adjusts brightness (vertical swipes) and volume (horizontal swipes), while the right one is used to navigate menus and control apps.

Voice control is available when third-party software is installed, as there is no built-in voice assistant from the manufacturer. There’s no active noise cancellation, so we experienced some false activations during testing when people nearby spoke.

The smart ring, connected via Bluetooth, offers an alternative control method. It includes four buttons and a touchpad.

The power/sleep button is located on the left arm, while the right arm has a customizable button that can be set to functions like “Main Menu,” “Back,” or “Open Camera.”

The built-in battery has a capacity of 500 mAh, offering about one hour of active use with XR features. In sleep mode, the battery lasted around 24 hours in our tests, though the manufacturer claims up to 10 days. An external power source can be connected, and the device charges via a magnetic USB-A cable included in the package.

The glasses run on INMO OS 2.0, based on AOSP. The system supports various apps and services. Integration of INMO AIR 2 with XR projects took about two weeks, including thorough testing. The device is already being used in several client projects.
