The first use of AR technology in a laboratory setting in Russia – CMD lab
Since June 2025, augmented reality technology has been implemented in laboratory testing for clients of CMD’s network of medical offices and clinics. The project was developed using the Russian-made IKSAR platform in close cooperation with CMD laboratory experts.
CMD Laboratory is one of the largest diagnostic laboratory centers in Russia, operating under the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor. With over 20 million tests performed annually, the lab's impressive productivity is achieved by combining a solid scientific foundation with cutting-edge innovation to enhance the speed and accuracy of diagnostics.
Commissioned by CMD Laboratory, the IKSAR team designed and developed a digital process for routing lab samples and conducting research using augmented reality glasses (AR glasses). These glasses can be operated not only by voice commands but also via an external wireless mini-keyboard.
A lab technician puts on the AR glasses, completes the authorization process, and begins the first stage of lab diagnostics—routing the samples.
Each sample is identified by scanning a unique barcode. Upon scanning, key information about the patient and the scheduled tests is displayed on the glasses screen in real time. The technician verifies the data, sorts the selected samples, and moves on to the next one.
The next step is performing the laboratory analysis. Test results are entered using voice input or the keyboard. A standard feature of the IKSAR platform includes photo or video documentation of key research stages.
For initial testing, CMD experts selected both monocular and binocular models of AR glasses from leading global manufacturers.
Currently, the IKSAR team, in collaboration with CMD Laboratory specialists, is conducting a trial of the new digital service, optimizing and refining the solution based on detailed feedback from end users.
The CMD management team views the adoption of advanced innovative technologies positively and anticipates further development and scaling of the project. This solution is expected to significantly accelerate lab diagnostics and enhance the digitalization of laboratory processes, ultimately delivering added value to CMD’s clients.
